Facial Paralysis Ayurvedic Treatment

Facial paralysis is characterised by the inability to move the muscles of face. It may affect the muscles of single or both sides of face or a small part of face, and the common causes are certain diseases like tumours, stroke, Bells’s palsy etc, genetic problems, or trauma/ injury. The nerve that supplies to facial muscles is damaged in this condition. The severity and prognosis of the condition depend on the cause.

Facial Paralysis Signs and Symptoms

The people with facial paralysis will experience slurring of speech, drooling of saliva, difficulty to swallow food and drinks, inability to close or open one eye, dryness of eyes etc.

Facial Paralysis Ayurvedic Analysis

Ardita or Ekayama is the characterised by weakness of one side of face and is mentioned under vatavyadhi (diseases due to vitiated vata). Its main features are deviation of face to either side, difficulty to speak/ smile/ open and close one eye/ sneeze, hearing problems, loss of sensation of smell, problems with memory, drooping of eyelid at one side etc. When the person tries to spit, the saliva/ water in mouth goes to one side or drool out.

Facial Paralysis Causative Factors (Ayurveda)

Ardita is commonly caused by bearing heavy weights over the head, speaking too much loudly/ over activity of facial muscles, indulging in strenuous works, forceful sneezing, use of hard pillow, chewing hard eatables, and all the other factors that causes vitiation of vata.

Possible Complications of Facial Paralysis Disease

The common complications are problem with physical appearance, irritability, difficulty to take food, sleep disturbances, stress, reduced quality of life etc.

Other systemic diseases and precautions to be taken

Rule out other risk conditions like brain infections, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy etc before planning the treatment.

Facial Paralysis Disease Management with Ayurveda Treatment

The treatment of Ardita is same as that of vatavyadhi. Internal medicines along with procedures like snehana (internal and external administration of suitable lipid formulation), swedana (eg: steam bath, kizhi, ksheeradhuma, pizhichil, shirodhara, muttakizhi etc), nasya (nasal instillation of medicine), virechana (purgation), gandusha (gargling with suitable medicine) etc are given depending on the cause and stage of the disease. Physiotherapy, yoga, meditation and pranayama are provided as supportive therapy.

Diet

The diet should be in semi-solid or liquid form. Avoid food and drinks that cause further vitiation of vata (eg: cold/ dry food, bitter, astringent, pungent tastes etc).

Exercise

Facial exercises that strengthen the facial muscles are recommended along with treatment. Physiotherapy and yoga are also given.

Facial Paralysis Preventive Aspects in Ayurveda

Avoid stress, over activity, consumption of food items that aggravate vata, bearing heavy weight on the head, speaking very loudly for long periods etc. Ensure adequate sleep. Apply suitable oil on scalp and face on a regular basis. Ayurvedic preventive measures to avoid vatavyadhi above neck region include nasya, karnapoorana, gandusha etc. Quit smoking. Avoid chances of injuries and infections. Control blood pressure.

Importance of Diet

Consumption of right food is essential during and after treatment in order to balance the Tridosha (bodily humours).
