Stages of Retinitis pigmentosa in Ayurveda

According to ayurvedic theory, this condition happens in three stages.

Stage of Kapha Predominance – Kapha vidaghdha drishti

In this stage, the predominant dosha is Kapha and the main symptom is night blindness. The treatment focuses on Kapha sodhana. If treated otherwise, the patient ends in a dangerous situation.

Stage of pitta-predominance with Kapha anubandha

Here, other visual symptoms starts. Pitta also comes into the picture. A decrease in vision, decrease in the visual field, colour blindness, etc. will be the main symptoms. The patient undergoes pitta-samana treatment at this stage. According to the prakriti of the patient, and his habits, the treatment schedule may vary. Habits of the bath, oil application, sleep, journey, etc get rearranged. This is to support the treatment.

Stage of tridosha predominance

In this stage, vata also gets vitiated. We see the symptoms of all the three doshas. would be a considerable decrease in the inability to see, color blindness, and also field loss. The patient will be in a stage where he cannot move freely. Only the central vision will be persisting in most cases. Here, Rasayana therapy should be the line of treatment. Vata-pitta samana, Rasayana, and chakshushya treatments are advised. Lifelong medications and treatments are necessary to prevent blindness once the disease has attained this stage.

Systematic ayurvedic cure for Retinitis Pigmentosa

The disease has long but slow progress. If not handled in time by an experienced hand, it is capable of leading to blindness. Degeneration of the retinal cells, especially the rod photoreceptors is the primary change. Later, the cone photoreceptors also get involved.

In most cases, night blindness will be the initial symptom. Later, there will be a decrease in the peripheral visual field. Also, the patient becomes the victim of colour blindness. In some cases, the central vision may persist until the last stage of the disease.

I am a Retinitis pigmentosa patient. Now my age is 35. I am a lady bank manager. I have a son who is 5 now year old. I know that this condition is a genetic disorder and so I am afraid of my son’s vision. He is having some problems with distant-vision and using myopic glass at present. Is there any method to protect his eyesight?

First of all, we have to diagnose whether your son is having Retinitis pigmentosa or not. Sometimes it may be only myopia. I am 35 years old and was using spectacles for the last 10 years. I noticed difficulty to see at night for the last 5 to 6 years. But, I did not take this seriously. 5 years back, when I went to an ophthalmologist, he diagnosed it as Retinitis Pigmentosa and he informed me that it is a nerve problem and there is NO successful treatment for this. I am really depressed. Is there any hope in Ayurveda?

If your disease is Retinitis Pigmentosa, really it is a serious problem. It is a degenerative condition. It is NOT totally curable. But, we can delay the deterioration and improve the functioning capacity of the existing cells. For this, Ayurveda can support you. A systematic treatment as an inpatient is absolutely necessary.

I am 45 years and I am an RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa) patient. I know this is a very dangerous condition because doctors say that there is NO treatment for this. Recently, my vision started deteriorating drastically. Can anything be done?

As you know, Retinitis Pigmentosa is a serious condition. In Ayurveda, there are many methods to support you. We can make your eyes more healthy and thereby the deterioration can be slowed down. You can prolong the life of your eyes. For that, first, have a detailed consultation to know about your treatment plan.

I am an Retinitis pigmentosa patient. My age is 42 years and i have already undergone ayurvedic treatment twice in a gap of 5 years. After treatment, I used to get little betterment. Do I have to keep on repeating this treatment? If yes, for how long?

Retinitis Pigmentosa is not a totally curable disease. You have to continue your medicines continuously. For the sake of simplicity, consider this just like taking treatment for diabetes, hypertension etc. The aim here is to help you manage your condition with medication and help you lead a normal life.

I have serious night blindness and vision problem. My ophthalmologist doctor told that this may be a symptom of a serious disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa. However, I feel confident now that I will manage with the present vision. But night blindness is my serious problem and can this alone be solved immediately?

There are mainly two situations in which night blindness can occur. One is independent night blindness. Another is as a symptom of Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). If it is associated with RP, then it is really serious and NOT totally curable, but should be managed immediately to avoid further deterioration. You have to protect your vision and avoid blindness. For this, Ayurveda can help you. First, have a consultation and have a differential diagnosis.
