Golfers Elbow Ayurvedic Treatment

This is the condition characterized by pain at the inner side of elbow joint where the muscle tendons attach to bone. Not only golf players are affected by this disease but anyone who use the elbow joint or wrist repeatedly.

Signs and symptoms

The common symptoms of Golfer’s elbow are pain and tenderness over the inner aspect of elbow joint which often radiate to arm and increased by movements of the arm; numbness; weakness and sometimes stiffness of the arm.

Ayurvedic analysis

When vata get aggravated in snayu (tendons and ligaments) it causes ayama (reduced tone) and kubjata (disability). Vata aggravation in sandhi (joint) will cause painful movements.

Causative factors (Ayurveda)

Aggravation of vata is usually caused by over activity, lack of rest, excess of intake of bitter/ astringent/ pungent tastes, very dry and cold food, light food, skipping of meals, injuries etc.

Possible complications

If left untreated, the person may feel difficulty to perform simple activities with hand.

Other systemic diseases and precautions to be taken

Check whether the individual is sporty; doing an occupation that demands repeated movements of the arms; suffering from other arthritic conditions, obesity etc.

Management

Management depends on the cause of the disease, its chronicity, state of dosha, presence of ama, occupation, age, prakruthi and place of residence of the patient. Internal medications along with local rukshana (if ama is present) or snehana (in the absence of ama), lepana (external application of suitable medicine) and agnikarma (cauterization) are enough to manage the problem.

Diet

Avoid spicy, cold and dry food; curd; Bengal gram etc. include more whole grains, vegetables, milk, small fishes and fruits in diet.

Exercise

Avoid strenuous movements of the elbow joint. Take proper rest in between continuous activities.

Preventive aspects

Avoid repetitive movements of the arms. Proper warm-up and warm-down are needed for sports persons. Do not bear heavy weight in hands. Avoid injuries to the elbow. Apply suitable oil all over the body before bath. Avoid sedentary habit.

Importance of diet

Following a healthy diet during and after treatment helps in speedy recovery as it pacifies aggravated vata in the joint/ tendon.

Lifestyle

Ensure proper warm-up and warm-down before and after exercise. Avoid over exertion of the joint. Take adequate rest in between works that demands repeated movements of hands. Quit smoking. Maintain healthy body weight. Take nutritious diet. Drink more water.
