Spondylolysis Ayurvedic Treatment

The defects in isthmus (bony connection between 2 vertebral bones) leading to its cracking is called spondylolysis. The condition may affect one or both sides of the vertebrae sometimes lead to slipping of the disc. It is caused by weakness of the isthmus which is often followed by repeated injuries on the lower back due to sports. 

Spondylolysis Signs and Symptoms

Sometimes, there may not be any symptoms. If they do occur, the person may feel low back pain which transmit to lower body, which become worsen with extension. 

Spondylolysis Ayurvedic Analysis

Pain, numbness, difficulty to move etc are the features of aggravated vata and the diseases characterised by these symptoms which affect the asthi (bones) and sandhi (joints) are grouped under vatavyadhi in Ayurveda. Bone fractures are described as bhagna of different types. 

Spondylolysis Causative Factors

This is caused by over-physical activity, trauma, etc. 

Possible Complications of Spondylolysis Disease

If left untreated, spondylolysis leads to spondylolisthesis. Nerve impingement, impaired movements, weight gain, loss of muscle mass and flexibility etc are other common complications. 

Other systemic diseases and precautions to be taken

Consider other conditions like spondylolisthesis, arthritis, etc before planning treatment. 

Spondylolysis Disease Management with Ayurveda Treatment

Symptomatic management is provided using internal medication, procedures like snehana (internal and / or external administration of lipid formulation of medicines), swedana (mild sudation therapy- eg: pizhichil), nasya (nasal administration of suitable drugs), virechana (purgation therapy), vasthi (enema with suitable medicines), lepana (external application of medicine), bandaging etc. Associated psychological distress is managed by psychotherapy and yoga. 

Diet

Include more whole grains, green and leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, milk and dairy products etc in diet and avoid the consumption of dry/ cold/ light food. 

Exercise

Exercise is not helpful in this condition as the bones are weak and cracked.

  • Avoid over-exertion.
  • Avoid chances of falls and injuries.
  • Eat healthy nutritious food.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Ensure adequate rest. 
  • Avoid abnormal body postures.
