Physical Exercises that are Dangerous for Diabetic Retinopathy Patients

Physical Exercises that are Dangerous for Diabetic Retinopathy Patients

Usually, diabetic patients practice physical exercise to control their blood sugar levels. But, if there is diabetic retinopathy (DR) as a complication, we have to be very careful in doing exercises. In DR, the main pathological changes occur in the microvascular system of the eye. Especially that of the retina. The engorgement of vessels of the retina and haemorrhages are the main among them. Bleeding of vessels is also seen in most cases.

DR Patients must select exercises that are suitable for their eye condition. They must avoid physical activities that facilitate possibility of bleeding in retinal vessels. Weightlift especially in bending positions is dangerous. Patients must avoid head-down postures and lying down in prone position. Walking in bright sunlight is also not recommended. Gardening and agricultural work in bending position are best avoided.

The temperature of water used for head bath is another important factor. A Head bath with hot water etc. should be avoided.
