Impaired memory is a part of ageing and it does not make grave glitches in daily life. Some people experience severe memory loss associated with dementia. Mild memory problems are manageable with medication. The signs of damaged memory appear during the 40’s and then gradually they worsen. Signs and Symptoms

Ayurvedic Analysis
Age a person growing old, vata increases and it produces several symptoms. Impaired memory is one among them. Ayurveda mentions it as ‘smriti bhramsha’, or ‘smrti nasha’.
Causative Factors (Ayurveda)
Smrti (memory) is the function of vata. Udana vayu (a type of vata) which travels in the body parts above shoulders controls smrti. Prajna (cognition) comprises smrti, dhee (intellect) and dhrti (will-power). Ageing causes vata dushti which results in smrti nasha. Smrti bhramsha is a sign of prajnaparadha (impaired cognitive strength).
Possible Complications
There may not be any serious complications due to memory loss in 40’s. some people may have difficulty with daily activities, work, depression etc.

Check whether the memory loss is associated with other conditions like dementia.
Management
The management of memory loss in 40’s includes internal medication to improve brain function, rasayana drugs (anti-aging medicine) etc. Procedures like snehana (internal/ external/ both), swedana (eg: sirodhara), nasya (nasal instillation of medicine), etc are provided. Supportive therapies like yoga, psychotherapy etc are also beneficial.
Diet
Use more milk and dairy products, nuts, whole grains, ghee, etc in diet.
Exercise
Regular exercise can prevent early aging. Yoga, meditation, and pranayama are effective to improve memory. Intellectual exercises are more helpful.

- Undergo rasayana therapy.
- Practice pranayama and yoga.
