Ayurvedic treatment for Astigmatism

Astigmatism comes under a group of eye problems known as refractive errors. The main reason for Astigmatism is the imperfect curvature of the cornea and lens. The surface should be uniformly spherical and smooth for normal refraction, and any deviation from these properties will cause Astigmatism.

Astigmatism Ayurvedic Treatment At Matha

Astigmatism comes under a group of eye problems known as refractive errors. Before coming to refractive errors and Astigmatism, we have to know what refraction is in the eye and its role in developing vision.

Refraction is the deviation of light rays when it passes from one medium to another. There are four such media in our eyes.

  • The external layer of the eyeball is known as the cornea.
  • A fluid medium behind the cornea known as aqueous humor
  • A more or less had gelly like medium behind the aqueous humor. It is biconvex in shape and is known as a crystalline lens.
  • A jellylike semifluid medium behind the lens is vitreous humour.

The light rays reflected from the external objects travel through the air parallel, and it reaches the cornea. The first refraction happens when these rays pass from the air to the cornea. i.e., it deviates towards the centre. And the light rays again passes through the cornea and all other media. Similar deviations of light rays happen when it passes through all these four media. As a result of these refractions, the light rays converge at a particular point on the retina.

Then, a series of reactions start in these retinal cells. Photochemical, electrical, and nervous changes are the main among them. As a result of these changes (responses), a nerve impulse gets formed. Light rays reflected from the object carry all the object’s details along with this. So, when they converge and create an impulse, it represents the object. In short, the external thing turns into a biological factor. This impulse gets carried to the brain stem, and there it is converted to the actual visual sense.

Astigmatism is mainly due to the defects of the cornea and lens

If there is any abnormality in any refractive medium, the refraction may not happen as expected. So, the light rays may not converge appropriately on the retina. So, the further steps of sense formation will be disturbed. Any refraction defect in any refractive medium is a refractive error. Factors like structural, anatomical, physiological, and even pathological abnormalities can lead to refractive errors.

Astigmatism is one of such refractive errors mentioned above. The main reason for Astigmatism is the imperfect curvature of the cornea and lens. The surface should be uniformly spherical and smooth for normal refraction, and any deviation from these properties will cause Astigmatism. Sometimes, defects in the quality and quantity of fluid media (aqueous humor and vitreous humor) may contribute to refractive error development. If it is not focussing on a single point, the condition is generally known as Astigmatism. Spectacles and contact lenses are the common supporting aids for this handicap. Lasik correction is another surgical method. But Lasik is done on patients only after they attain 18 years of age.

Nowadays, people searching for remedial measures are coming to Ayurveda. The reasons are :

  • They won’t like to wear spectacles – external glass pieces on their eyes
  • Contact lenses are sometimes allergic and inconvenient for many people
  • Lasik correction may precipitate thinning of cornea and dryness, which may later cause other ophthalmic pathologies
  • They won’t like to make any non-reversible anatomic changes on their cornea
  • People using spectacles understand that it is not part of treatment, but just a mechanical supporting aid only

Astigmatism is a common refractive error, characterized by the deviation of light rays passing through the eye’s refractive media. Refraction, the bending of light when it moves from one medium to another with a different refractive index, is essential for focusing light onto the retina.

However, if there are irregularities in the refractive surfaces or media of the eye, such as the cornea or lens, light rays may not converge on a single point on the retina, resulting in astigmatism.

Symptoms of astigmatism include blurred vision, headaches, eye strain, watering of the eyes, and sometimes squinting to obtain a clearer image. Modern treatments for astigmatism include glasses, contact lenses, and LASIK surgery.

In Ayurveda, treatment focuses on restoring balance to the body’s doshas (vata, pitta, kapha). Astigmatism may result from vitiation of vata or kapha doshas, affecting the movement of light rays or the refractive media’s surface irregularities. Treatment aims to correct these imbalances and restore normal refractive function.

Various Ayurvedic treatments may be employed, including massage therapies like shiro abhyanga (head massage) and thalam (application of oil on the head). Internal medicines strengthen ocular muscles, nerves, and tissues, while local ophthalmic medications may be applied directly to the eyes. Tharpanam, a procedure involving filling the eyes with medicated substances, is also used.

Treatment plans are tailored to individual patients, considering factors such as body constitution, eye strain, and the underlying cause of astigmatism. Progressive cases of astigmatism require prompt treatment to prevent worsening symptoms and potential lifelong issues.

Overall, Ayurvedic treatment for astigmatism aims to restore normal ocular function by addressing underlying imbalances and promoting ocular health.

Systematic ayurvedic cure for Astigmatism

Astigmatism is due to the defects in the conduction of light rays in the fluid medium. So, we can say that Vata and Kapha are the main doshas involved in the development of Astigmatism. Any defect in the properties of these doshas leads to Astigmatism. Especially changes in the smoothness and curvature of the cornea.

Like any other anatomical structure of our body, all the refractive media (Cornea, Aqueous Humor, Lens, and Vitreous humor) are made up of living cells. They have their metabolism, catabolism, nutrition, etc. So, defects in these mediums can be corrected by medicine.

Ayurvedic Theory on the treatment of Astigmatism

Treatment in Ayurveda aims to bring your ophthalmic system back to normal. There are various treatment methods in Ayurveda to acheive this goal. According to Ayurvedic / Tridosha theory, light rays as such is Pitta predominant. The conduction of light rays is the function of Vata, especially Vyanavayu. The fluid media is always Kapha dominant. The fraction of Kapha that performs the eye’s functions is Tharpaka Kapha. So, we can say that focusing or convergence of light rays on the retina is the synchronized action of Vata, Pitta and Kapha in the eyes.

The photochemical, electrical and chemical reactions followed by this convergence is the function of Alochakapitta (Chakshurvaisheshika Alochakapitta). As a result, the impulse gets formed, which gets carried again by Vata to the visual centre. There, reactions occur again, performed by Alochakapitta (Budhivaisheshika Alochakapitta). This particular function is carried out only under the control of Pranavayu. That means Vata and Pitta are equally important in this step.

These structures are living cells, just like any other body structure – such as skin, bone, etc. And it has its functions such as nourishment, metabolic and catabolic actions etc. The medicines will act on these very well. So, internal medicines also will work positively. But, the selection of the right medications should be made very carefully. It should act on the ophthalmic tissues and should not create any damage to these delicate structures.

Refraction is the function of vata in a Kapha predominant medium. So, Vata and Kapha are equally important in refractive errors.

The practice of correct eyeball movements will regulate and normalize the functions of vata such as conduction, transmission etc. To acheive these, the muscles and ligaments should be flexible and elastic. There are very effective treatment procedures in Ayurveda to maintain these properties. Sirodhara, Nasyan, Netratharpanam, etc. Using selected appropriate medicines is very effective. In short, appropriately selected internal medication, the practice of scientific eyeball movements, and highly specialized ayurvedic treatment procedures are sufficient enough to control Astigmatism.

Correct position and body posture are crucial for normal refraction of the eye. Keep a minimum of 10 feet from the screen while watching TV. Never watch TV, mobile screens etc., either lying down or sideways. Better NOT to watch mobile screens in a dark room

Frequently Asked Questions

My son, who is now eight years old, is diagnosed with astigmatism. He is using spectacles having -3.25 cylindrical power. Are there any methods in Ayurveda to avoid his spectacles?

Astigmatism is a condition developed due to abnormalities of the refractive media, mainly the cornea. Changes in the curvature, irregularities of the surface etc., are main among them. There are very scientific treatment procedures and medications to make the cornea normal.

Suppose the abnormality is a permanent structural anomaly; better to continue the spectacles. If it is by some pathological changes such as lack of smoothness of the surface, deviation in curvature, thinning of the cornea etc., Ayurvedic methods will give good results.

My son is now nine years and has been diagnosed with myopic astigmatism. He started to use spectacles at the age of 6 years, and their power has been increasing gradually. Now it is -4.25 spherical and -2 cylindrical in both eyes. The doctor advises increasing the spectacles' power as per the necessity and getting the LASIK treatment done when he reaches 20 years. We don't prefer this approach. How can ayurveda help us?

There are very effective ayurvedic treatments for your child. He need not wait up to 20 years to get treatment, and it is better to start the treatment as early. Vision can be improved, and systematic ayurvedic therapies can gradually reduce glass’s power.

I am now 15 years and currently using glasses for the last six years. I was told that I have astigmatism, and now the power of my spectacles is -2.5. Can Ayurveda reverse astigmatism, and will I be able to eradicate my usage of glasses?

There is a possibility. For that, scientific level treatment procedures such as sirodhara, Netra Tharpanam, Netra Vyayamam, etc are to be done along with oral medications. You have to get hospitalized to undergo these treatments, and you can expect the first level of improvement after this course of treatment. After that, you will also have to continue medicines and treatments at home. Repeated treatment procedures will be necessary as per the doctor’s advice to get better results. The power of the glass can be reduced in a step-by-step (phased manner) only.

My daughter is ten years old. She is complaining of headaches while reading and working on a laptop. After a checkup, it was diagnosed as myopia and astigmatism and advised to use spectacles now and go for Lasik treatment after 19 years of age. We won't like to have a laser in her eyes. Also, we don't want to wait for another ten more years for a solution. Is there any method in Ayurveda to improve her vision?

It may be progressive myopia with astigmatism. It is possible to improve the vision in a child by systematic ayurvedic treatments. There are scientific procedures and oral medicines for that, and inpatient level (admitted) treatments will be necessary.

My son is twelve years and is having myopia and astigmatism. He has been using spectacles for the last five years. But, the power of his spectacles has been increasing every year. Now, it is -6 spherical along with -1.5 cylindrical. The doctor told me this would continue up to 19 years, and then LASIK can be done to prevent further progress. Waiting for another seven years to get treatment is too much for us, and we are afraid of what his vision will be at that time. Can Ayurveda help my child?

Yes, Ayurveda can help you. You need not wait for a year to get good treatment. There are methods in Ayurveda to improve the vision and make your eye healthy enough. Therefore, systematic treatment procedures, oral medicines, and correct eye exercise are necessary. This is done as an inpatient under the monitoring of the doctor only.

My daughter is only four years only. We noticed that she was squinting her eyes while watching TV. We took her to the doctor, and after a checkup, the doctor said she had astigmatism and myopia and prescribed spectacles with -1.5 spherical and -0.5 cylindrical. The doctor asked us to check her vision every six months and warned that there is a chance of increasing the power. No treatments was advised, simply warning and waiting only. I am disappointed. Can Ayurveda help my daughter in any way?

Of course, Ayurveda can help you. If you start Ayurvedic treatment now, it is easy to get good results. Of course, the vision can be improved and chances of removing the spectacles are there. Get a medical consultation from us first.
