Types of Glaucoma
According to science, there are two types of Glaucoma:
Open-angle Glaucoma – simple chronic glaucoma
It is a silent enemy. The onset is gradual and without considerable symptoms. Hence, most patients are unaware of the development of the disease. In a very early stage, there will be no visual symptoms. Mild headache, the heaviness of head are common. Feeling of fullness in the eye more in the morning or evening is also seen. Visual symptoms also start to develop. A decrease in distant vision is one of them. A decrease in the visual field, especially, peripheral is another main symptom. As the symptoms increases, the patient moves towards blindness.
Closed-angle Glaucoma – acute congestive glaucoma
Here, the onset is sudden. Redness of eye and congestion of vessels are the main symptoms. Severe pain, photophobia, and headache are also seen. If not handled with care, there are chances of loss of eyesight within a few days.
Ayurvedic Theory on the treatment of Glaucoma
In Ayurveda, glaucoma comes under the head – Adhimandha. Next, confirmation of predominant dosha and associated symptoms take place. This leads to, classification as vatadhimandha, pittadhimandha, kaphadhimandha, or rakthadhimandha. The treatment for each condition is different from one another. Analysis of Signs and symptoms of each case happens on the basis of the tridosha theory. Next, doctors confirm the predominant dosha. Only after that, ayurvedic eye treatment starts. That means treatment may vary from one individual to another.
In vatadhimandha, Vata Samana and Snigdha therapies are preferable. In pittadhimandha, doctors administer pitta rakta sodhana therapy. In kaphadhimandha, doctors administer Kapha sodhana and Siro virechana procedures. In rakthadhimandha, rakthasodhana should be the first choice. Internal medicines, generally sodhana in nature also is compulsory. Appropriate dietary schedules and regulations in other habitual factors also are necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
I am a glaucoma patient using eye drops for the last 6 years. Even the I.O.P (Intraocular pressure) increased and my eysight is decreasing. Is there any treatment in Ayurveda?
In your case, a systematic approach is necessary. Before external ophthalmic medications, a systematic sodhana treatment such as panchakarma is useful. After that proceed with specific ophthalmic procedures. They are Anjana, jalaukavacharanam, tharpanam, etc.
I am a glaucoma patient and using anti-glaucomatous drops for the last five (5) years. I.O.P (Intraocular pressure) is under control, but the eyesight is decreasing. Can Ayurveda help me?
Since your I.O.P is under control, it is easy to take the necessary measures to improve your ability to see. For this, internal as well as special ophthalmic procedures are there in Ayurveda.
I am suffering from glaucoma and am under medication for the same. Now, I am not able to see the peripheral object. I see only central objects. I did a field test. It confirmed peripheral field loss. Is there any treatment in Ayurveda?
Field defect is one of the major problems in glaucoma patients. According to Ayurveda, it is due to the vitiation of Vata. Due to Vata predominance, your retina is getting weak and degenerated. Ayurveda can control the vitiation of Vata and thereby strengthen the retina. This type of management will benefit your eyes.
My eye pressure is 32 mm/Hg in the left eye and 44 mm/Hg in the Right eye. For the last 5 years, I am using eye drops for glaucoma. 3 years back, I had undergone surgery for the same complaint. Still, the pressure is not controlled. Now, my vision is getting deteriorated. Can I save my sight by ayurvedic methods?
Ayurvedic methods can arrest the deterioration. But, you must take medicine for a very long period. The treatment includes external medication as well as internal medicine.
