Ayurvedic treatment for Blepharitis

Blepharitis refers to inflammation of the eyelids, particularly focusing on the lid margins. The eyelid margins are significant due to the presence of eyelashes, which are among the toughest hairs in the body. Associated with each eyelash are two types of glands: sebaceous glands and sweat glands. Apart from closing the eyelid and protecting the eye from external pathogens, the eyelids also contribute to various functions, including the production of secretions that help prevent eye dryness.

Symptoms of blepharitis include redness of the eye, discharge (sometimes sticky or gooey, especially in the mornings), and severe itching. There are different types of blepharitis, classified based on whether the symptoms present as wetter and swelling or dry and crusty.

In Ayurveda, the dominant dosha (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha) varies depending on the characteristics of the inflammation. While inflammation is generally dominated by Pitta, if the condition presents with dryness and crustiness, Vata dominance should be considered. If there are high discharges and redness, Pitta may be dominant.

Blepharitis tends to become chronic over time, leading to increased symptoms and potential structural changes in the eyelids. Chronic blepharitis can result in eyelash loss, eyelash deformities causing them to touch the cornea, or even corneal inflammation (keratitis).

Treatment in Ayurveda aims to control inflammation, with approaches varying depending on the stage and characteristics of the disease. Initially, treatments focus on pacifying Pitta dominance, while in chronic stages, both Pitta and Kapha dominance may need to be addressed. Treatments include local applications of medicated substances along the lid margins, procedures to open blocked gland openings, and evacuating stagnant blood using medicinal leech therapy (Jalauka karma).

Recurrence of blepharitis is common if the causative factors are not addressed comprehensively. Prevention of recurrence involves avoiding triggering factors, using appropriate ocular cosmetics, and maintaining good eye hygiene.

Complications of chronic blepharitis include eyelid deformities, cancerous growths, or corneal inflammation due to eyelash abnormalities. However, with proper Ayurvedic treatment tailored to the dominant dosha and stage of the disease, blepharitis can be effectively managed, leading to a good prognosis
