Ayurvedic treatment for BRVO – Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion

BRVO stands for branch retinal vein occlusion, which occurs when a branch of the central retinal vein, responsible for draining blood from the retina, becomes blocked. Various factors can lead to this condition, including high cholesterol levels, platelet disorders, and calcium deposits, similar to central venous occlusion. The main symptom of BRVO is hemorrhage, resulting from the blockage causing leakage into surrounding areas of the retina. Hemorrhages can be easily detected with an ophthalmoscope and often lead to hypoxic areas, impacting vision.

BRVO typically affects the peripheral vessels of the retina, leading to loss of peripheral vision. Hypoxia triggers the development of collateral vessels to compensate for the lack of oxygen, which may resolve small hemorrhages and blockages. However, collateral vessels are delicate and prone to bleeding, leading to complications such as neovascularization and retinal damage.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, BRVO involves the imbalance of pitta and kapha doshas. Pitta dominance leads to vascular changes and blockages, while kapha contributes to the formation of scar tissue. Treatment focuses on restoring the flow of pitta and dissolving kapha to alleviate blockages. Shodhana chikitsa, aimed at draining unwanted substances, and medications to maintain pitta’s flowing nature are key aspects of treatment.

Additionally, maintaining circulation and normal blood flow is crucial to prevent further blockages. Ayurvedic treatments aim to balance the vata dosha, responsible for circulation, and maintain cardiovascular health. Periodical maintenance procedures help keep the body’s systems functioning optimally, reducing the risk of recurrent blockages.

Initial treatment for BRVO involves ophthalmic procedures under expert supervision, followed by home medications to maintain the patient’s condition and prevent further blockages. Following these treatments diligently can yield positive results and protect against future complications.
