Choroiditis is inflammation of the choroid, a layer within the eyeball’s vascular coat. The eyeball consists of three layers: the fibrous layer (sclera), the vascular layer (choroid), and the nervous layer (retina). The choroid is responsible for supplying blood vessels to the eye.
Symptoms of choroiditis include blurred vision, pain, sensitivity to light, and in severe cases, discharge or watering of the eye. If left untreated, choroiditis can progress to involve other structures of the eye, leading to conditions like uveitis or retinitis.
Treatment of choroiditis in Ayurveda focuses on controlling the inflammatory aspect of the condition, as inflammation is associated with the pitta dosha. Specific treatments such as ropana (healing) therapy are utilized to restore balance to pitta
To address impaired blood circulation, jalauka (medicinal leech therapy) may be employed to remove stagnant or impaired blood from the vessels of the eye. Oral medications are also crucial for maintaining the properties of pitta and supporting overall eye health.
Various ocular medication techniques, such as seka (pouring), anjana (application), or aschyotana (eye drops), are used to deliver medications directly to the affected area. Treatment modalities are selected based on the specific stage and presentation of the condition.
Recurrence of choroiditis is common if the underlying cause is not addressed comprehensively. Therefore, it’s essential to consider the systemic factors contributing to the condition and tailor treatment accordingly to prevent recurrence. Maintaining regular treatment or follow-up care is crucial in managing choroiditis effectively and preventing further complications
