Ayurvedic treatment for Progressive Myopia

Myopia is influenced by anatomical factors such as the curvature of the cornea and the length of the eyeball. These anatomical variations can cause myopia to develop, often manifesting before the age of 10 and progressively worsening as the child grows. This progression occurs as the distance from the retina to the cornea increases, causing light rays to converge even further in front of the retina.

There are two types of myopia: physiological and pathological. Physiological myopia is primarily attributed to anatomical variations and progresses during the growth stages, typically until around 19 or 20 years of age. On the other hand, pathological myopia involves additional pathological factors beyond anatomical changes, leading to progressive worsening of the condition even after physiological growth stops.

Complications of pathological myopia can be severe, with vision often unable to be corrected with glasses due to factors unrelated to refractive error. One such complication is retinal detachment, which can result in permanent vision loss if left untreated.

In Ayurvedic theory, all three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—are considered important in treating myopia. Treatment approaches vary depending on the dominance of specific doshas in the individual patient. Cleansing treatments, followed by nourishing or strengthening measures, are typically employed to address the underlying imbalances.

Early intervention is crucial in managing myopia, as it can prevent progression and complications. Ayurvedic treatment aims to arrest the condition’s progression and restore normal vision through a combination of medicinal therapies, ocular treatments, and lifestyle modifications.

Parents should closely monitor their child’s vision and seek treatment promptly if myopia is detected. Delaying treatment can lead to further complications and permanent vision impairment. By addressing myopia early with appropriate Ayurvedic interventions, vision can be preserved, and the risk of future complications minimized.
