Ayurvedic treatment for CRVO – Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

Central retinal vein occlusion, commonly known as CRVO, is a blockage or occlusion in the main vein of the retina. The retina, being the most crucial layer of the eyeball, any pathology in this layer will lead to loss or decreased vision. The central vein is responsible for the main outflow of venous blood from the ocular system, primarily from the retina. Therefore, if there is a blockage in this vein, there will be a sudden arrest of venous blood outflow, resulting in serious pathology in the retina.

The primary symptom of CRVO is leakage from the vein, typically observed as hemorrhage, even with an ophthalmoscope. The main reasons for this blockage include hyperlipidemia (increased cholesterol levels), calcium deposits, and abnormalities in platelet count in the bloodstream. These factors impact the venous musculature and result in similar signs and symptoms, akin to an ocular stroke.

CRVO is categorized into two forms: ischemic and non-ischemic. Ischemic CRVO, characterized by loss of blood supply, is more serious as it leads to cell degeneration more easily compared to non-ischemic CRVO.

In Ayurveda, treatment follows the principles of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Pitta, associated with blood vessels and blood circulation, is considered vitiated in CRVO. Kapha dosha is believed to vitiate Pitta in CRVO, leading to blockages. Treatment aims to remove the blockage and restore normal blood flow by addressing the vitiation of Pitta and Kapha.

Effective Ayurvedic treatments for CRVO involve eliminating accumulated Kapha, promoting normal blood flow, and restoring balance to Vata. Additionally, addressing risk factors such as high cholesterol levels, hypertension, and diabetes is crucial in preventing further occurrences.

CRVO is considered a medical emergency, and prompt treatment is essential to prevent permanent vision loss. Treatment may involve both localized ocular medication and systemic treatments to address underlying imbalances.

Preventive measures such as regular monitoring of cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels are recommended to reduce the risk of recurrence. By addressing both acute symptoms and underlying imbalances, Ayurvedic treatment can effectively manage CRVO and preserve vision.
